Porn in the Backseat

The truth behind the internet, and every other media outlet in history (with the exception of perhaps broadcast television), is that pornography has driven the rise of the medium. Eventually the porn fades to the background and the medium becomes mature in it’s own right. With the internet this period of porn dominance has lasted far longer than in most other movements, naturally due to the ease of free access and anonimity.

Has porn finally taken the proverbial back seat on the internet? A new report from Hitwise.com shows that not only has porn consumption (at least as a % of internet traffic) has been waning since 2005 (down from 16.9% to 11.9%), but it has now been usurped as the single largest web activity by the powerhouse phenomena of social networking sites in the 18 – 24 demographic.

Though some have posited that this is a short lived trend that is attributable only to the fact that so many people are dipping their toes into the world of social networking and are developing their social identities online. We’ll just have to wait and see, but the trend is hopefull as it seems the fastest growing demographic in social networking is the 30+ crowd, and the study as I said is representative of the 18 – 24 demographic.

One Response to “Porn in the Backseat”

  1. I think that pre-made porn has merely been (partially) replaced with something more interactive… social networking sites allow for dirty talk and cybersex and photo sharing and meeting people to hook up, so all the porn-seekers are getting something more real-time than just photos and videos now…
