Dalai Lama “Cultist”?

In another inane act of propaganda by the Chinese government, the Dalai Lama has now been cateragorized as a supporter of “cults”. According to a strongly worded commentary by the official (read state run) Xinhua news agency, the Dalai Lama “not only has no hatred toward evil cults but instead shows a great deal of compassion for them.” They continue by asserting that it was his “support” of Shoko Asahara and his Aum Shinrikyo cult that made Ashara confident that he had strong backing when he carried out a sarin nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway in 1995 which killed 12 and made thousands sick.

As usual this is the typical slander that the Chinese government bandies about in it’s war against the exiled 14th Dalai Lama, a man they have deemed to be a Tibetan “separatist”. Other recent acts by the Chinese government meant to repress and control Tibettan Buddhism include the Chinese detention six years ago of a boy whom the Dalai Lama had confirmed as the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama, Tibet’s second-ranking religious figure, and their susequent recognition of a different boy as said reincarnation.

Most recently, on September 1, 2007 communist China issued new rules controlling the selection of the next Dalai Lama which will virtually prevent his followers from choosing his reincarnation, since any reincarnation must bear the seal of approval by China’s cabinet. There is little in this world more arrogant than a government trying to oppress the religious beliefs of it’s people by trying to dictate doctorine.

  1. that is so insane. how long are we going to ignore this?

thanks for the post! I missed this on mainstream media

  2. Keep an eye on the main-stream media too; someone has a team of ‘bloggers’ going around posting similarly suggestive comments against him in the comments sections of every online news story about this topic. All these posts (hundreds) use the same basic grammar and phrasing too. Hmmm.

  3. So do you know for a fact that Dalai Lama didn’t support Aum Shinrikyo? I found your blog looking for the “truth” on that specific matter. Actually, I’ve found several sources saying he did just that – among others Christopher Hickens.

  4. Marcus, no one but the Dalai Lama himself and Shoko Ashara himself could tell you that. The point is, who are you going to believe. A spiritual leader whose faith preaches harm to no one and the reduction of suffering for all mankind, or The Peoples Republic of China, a propogandist communist nation who has annexed Tibet, tried to rewrite religious doctorine and run it’s own citizens over in the streets. Hmmmm…. I suppose that is a tough question.

And Hitchens? A former Trotskiest and avowed athiest who believes that religion is the root of all evil? Again, not impressed.

No one can know for sure, but my gut and my brain help me filter who I get my information from. So far the sources on this story that call the Dalai Lama a supporter of cults and terrorists, are on my short list. The one labeled in big, bold red letters -DO NOT TRUST-.
